RE: F-250 6.4 south comfort 08 questions

If the tires are oversized and they changed the gears, they went the wrong way! They should go up in numbers for larger tires, not down. It will be a dog towing with that gearing and oversized tires.

RE: Looking and wondering

GM may only offer the Duramax with 3.73 because it keeps the engine rpm in its powerband. 4.10s are not always going to pull better if the engine is running at such high rpms that it leaves the powerband. What do you plan on towing that a diesel with 3.73s may not be enough?

RE: Chrysler's electric vehicle line up

I think its excellent that the Big 3 are starting to look into electric vehicles to complement some of their (necessary) larger vehicles. Shame on the people who are bashing the Big 3 for developing them now, better late than never. It seems the big three are dam*ed if they do and dam*ed if they dont. Some people neglect to realize that the reason the Big 3 built so many large vehicles was because WE demanded them, and now they are building electric vehicles and hybrids because WE are starting to demand those. Will they be more expensive than a comparable fossil fuel powered car? Sure, but that is to be expected with any kind of new technology. Chances are GM, Ford, and Chrysler will sell these cars at a price just to break even on manufacturing them in order to get them on the streets, then when the demand for them gets high, they will start to lower production costs per vehicle and make a profit.
Thanks for the post Surveyor.

RE: GM, Chrysler Are Open to Merger If Part of Bailout

I have a question and someone please point out if im heading in the wrong direction. Back a few years ago when times were pretty good for the Big 3, how much did they pay in taxes to the federal government, and how much income tax did its employees pay to the government? It seems like those numbers would easily add up to tens of billions of dollars over a few years. So maybe it would be good for the government to give the Big 3 a second chance as an investment that will pay off when the Big 3 start to be successful again.

RE: Dodge anti-spin issue

I think in order for a limited slip (or limited "spin" in your case) to work, you must have a certain amount of traction on one wheel for the other to get any power to it. So, if both wheels are on ice or snow, and neither have much traction, only one will spin. You could test this by driving half the truck onto say a snow covered lawn and the other side onto a dry driveway. The side on the snow should spin then you will feel a push when the plates within the differential bind together. May tear up your lawn though.
Good luck. Mike

RE: 2006 truck with intermediate shaft problem

I had mine replaced 20,000 miles ago on my 2003 and no further problems with it. From what I understand the clunk is not dangerous and won't get worse with age...it is just a annoying. The total replacement fixes the problem, the greasing puts a band-aid on it. I think your dealer is taking the easy cheap way out of fixing it right.
Good luck. Mike

RE: Chrysler asks for bailout, gives bonuses....

What's even more awkward, is the fact that GM and Ford leaders would not accept a $1 a year salary, however Bob Nardelli of Chrysler would, in order to receive some help from the government.
Im sure he is banking on making up for lost salary in bonuses, much like he is probably accepting right now as one of the top executives receiving $30 million. The salaries don't even compare to the income these people get from their bonuses.

RE: Towing 6800# with an F150? Should I go 3/4 ton instead?

Hey Ben
You don't mention what engine you will have in the Ford. Im assuming it will be the 5.4 liter. You will be well within the limits of the f150 towing your trailer per manufacturer tow rating, but it will work traveling uphill. The Suburban with 8.1 liter won't even break a sweat. As far as hauling like you mention, the f150 will be much more conveniant because you can toss things in the bed. As far as snow plowing, either will handle a plow, but the suburban would be better suited for plowing because it is on a 3/4 ton chassis. As far as hooking on to the car hauler for a test drive, it wont simulate towing the TT (unless it is enclosed), because half the battle of towing a travel trailer is overcoming wind resistance. Both are top notch tow vehicles and have their ups and downs. I would tend to lean more towards the ford for milage and convenience, and it is newer.
Good luck with whatever your decision. Have a good one.

RE: Hats off to the Big 3

2003Silverado, don't you know it is useless to point out anything good done here or made here.
I know what you mean, and I really didnt mean for it to come to this. Even though the Big 3 haven't managed themselves in a completely ethical fashion I still support them and really don't want to see them go under. I laugh when people say they want to see the Big 3 go under. I dont think they know how big the Big 3 really are and how far they reach. I have heard estimates that if the Big 3 go under, unemployment will go over 20%. I dont know how accurate that estimate is, but it shows how many jobs are affected by the big three even though they arent directly employed by them.
I didn't mean to bring up hard feelings during depressing times.

Hats off to the Big 3

Interesting article on behalf of CNN. With all the hard feelings toward the Big 3 lately, this is a nice change in attitude towards them. May be old news but still interesting. Not meant to offend anyone
Ford & GM
An interesting commentary.
You might find this of interest:
'CNN Headline News did a short news listing regarding Ford and GM's contributions to the relief and recovery efforts in New York and Washington.
The findings are as follows.....
1. Ford- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number plus 10 Excursions to NY Fire Dept.
The company also offered ER response team services and office space to displaced government employees.
2. GM- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number and a fleet of vans, suv's, and trucks.
3. Daimler Chrysler- $10 million to support of the children and victims of the Sept. 11 attack.
4. Harley Davidson motor cycles- $1 million and 30 new motorcycles to the New York Police Dept.
5. Volkswagen-Employees and management created a Sept 11 Foundation, funded initial with $2 million, for the assistance of the children and victims of the WTC.
6. Hyundai- $300,000 to the American Red Cross.
7. Audi-Nothing.
8. BMW-Nothing.
9. Daewoo- Nothing.
10. Fiat-Nothing.
11. Honda- Nothing despite boasting of second best sales month ever in August 2001
12. Isuzu- Nothing.
13. Mitsubishi-Nothing.
14. Nissan-Nothing.
15. Porsche-Nothing. Press release with condolences via the Porsche website.
16. Subaru- Nothing.
17. Suzuki- Nothing.
18. Toyota-Nothing despite claims of high sales in July and August 2001.
Condolences posted on the website.
Whenever the time may be for you to purchase or lease a new vehicle, keep this information in mind. You might want to g ive more consideration to a car manufactured by an American-owned and / or American based company.
Apart from Hyundai and Volkswagen, the foreign car companies contributed nothing at all to the citizens of the United States.
It's OK for these companies to take money out of this country, but it is apparently not acceptable to return some in a time of crisis.
Have a good one. Mike

RE: Edmunds. long term test 07 Chevy Silverado 1500, not good.

How can anyone attest to the quality of the 2009 Dodge Ram? How long has in been out? A few months at best? Is this the first model year they are offering the Hemi with the "active fuel management"? It seems absurd to suggest that the 2009 Dodge Ram is leaps and bounds ahead of GM because after more 20 months a transmission in a GM truck failed, and the 2009 Ram has only been out a short while.

RE: Edmunds. long term test 07 Chevy Silverado 1500, not good.

My gosh listen to some of you people. You would think that you were insulting some people's wives the way they are getting so offended.
Maybe we should remember that the reason all of the Big 3 are doing poorly is because of the economy and the high gas prices, not quality issues.
And this whole thing got started by a Dodge guy who posted an article about a failed chevy and now hes sitting back laughing at this fight he started. Maybe he didn't mean for this to happen, and was trying to be informative. All of the Big 3 have to be good quality vehicles in order to still be around today. And if quality WAS the reason for the Big 3 to be doing poorly right now it wouldn't have happened in the past year.
After all, these are just trucks we are talking about. I am a Chevy guy and will continue to be. I also understand that other peple buy other trucks and are very satisfied with them and I am happy for them, and don't see the need to persuade them to buy chevy, or condemn their trucks.
So everyone go enjoy your truck and let others enjoy theirs.

RE: Edmunds. long term test 07 Chevy Silverado 1500, not good.

I would have to agree that it is a lemon, and not a common occurance.
Uncle Bob has a 2007 silverado with the vortec max and 4l65e with 120,000 miles on it with no issues. He works for a Bobcat dealership and spends his time pulling equipment trailers to prospective customers to deliver demo equipment. Some of the loads are on the upper-end of the towing capacity of the truck, but he can't leave the dealership with a load that puts him over the GCVWR of the truck due to liability issues for Bobcat.
There is not one auto manufacturer that is immune to a drivetrain failure in a new vehicle. It is just a case of bad luck that in this case the recipient of a fluke vehicle was a large vehicle review company.

It depends upon your definition of "best torque"
The Duramax has highest peak torque, but the Cummins has a flatter torque curve across the RPM range.

RE: Considering a 1500HD with a 6L

If you people who are saying that the 6.0 does not compare torque wise to the duramax are referring to my post you would do well to realize that I was referring to the OP's original truck with the 6.5 liter diesel. You are right that the 6.0 does not compare with the duramax but does compare to the 6.5 liter diesel. Just clarifying.

RE: Considering a 1500HD with a 6L

My current TV is a 1500HD with the 6.0 liter. I have the 3.73 rear end and am satisfied with the towing performance. City driving I can't get better than 11-12 mpg, and highway at 65 I can average about 15-16 mpg.
I would not hesitate to tow your trailer with a 1500HD. The 6.0 will have more horsepower than you current truck, with slightly less torque. The 6.6 would be nice, but not necessary for your trailer.
Good Luck.
